After the summer heat in August, can you feel a slight change in the air this month? Yet, this breeze has been delayed year by year due to climate change.
Climate change dramatically affects all sectors, including the agriculture and fishery sector, and its impacts result in disruptions to the vitality of rural livelihoods, ecosystems, and biodiversity. It has especially increased the hazardous conditions under which small-scale fishers work, as natural disasters become even more prevalent and destructive. Damage and loss of fishing craft and gear due to accidents and natural disasters threaten the livelihood of small-scale fishing communities.
In this month’s highlight, we prepared a list of publications and events to examine how different financial instruments could mitigate the climate change risks and their impact on rural livelihood.
Guidelines for increasing access of small-scale fisheries to insurance services
The webinar will have a discussion on the study of Current Review of Global Fisheries and Aquaculture Insurance, conducted by FAO across all the regions, which provides a framework to offer suitable services by insurance and fisheries stakeholders, to strengthen and increase the capacity of insurance service providers, fisher-folk organizations, NGO’s, and government agencies for providing insurance to small-scale fisheries.
