Theme 4: Can Microfinance Empower Women?

Topic :

Women’s empowerment – interpreted as a process in which women challenge the existing norms and culture, to effectively improve their well-being. This poster is based on empirical study based on self help bank linkage programme (SHG) in India.

Two methodologies were used in estimating women empowerment. First is item response theory (random effect probit estimated, where women empowerment is estimated as the random effect conditional on the fitted parameters). Second is difference-in-difference model.

Results of this research show that there is clear evidence that microfinance provided by SHG leads to women’s empowerment. However, involvement of MFIs and NGOs is crucial in training and awareness creation.
