Promoting inclusive green finance in agriculture
In recent years, stakeholders in the financial inclusion sector have shown interest in creating innovative financial services tailored to vulnerable agricultural actors. These services aim to promote sustainable practices, technologies, and production models to boost farmers’ resilience and growth amid the escalating impacts of climate change. Positioned at the crossroads of financial inclusion and environmental sustainability, this “inclusive green finance” approach seeks to merge financial service promotion suitable for small-scale agriculture with incentives that encourage sustainable agriculture, forest protection, efficient water use, clean energy transitions, and practices related to climate change adaptation and mitigation, environmental protection, and efficient natural resource use.
This publication helps bridge the knowledge gap in inclusive green finance by presenting concrete case studies across various green finance aspects in agriculture, with a keen focus on promoting sustainable small-scale agricultural production. These case studies illustrate how diverse institutions that support agriculture in developing countries have developed innovative and impactful models to integrate climate-smart and “green” considerations into their financial services. These models could inspire and be adapted by other stakeholders in similar contexts.
This is a joint publication with GIZ produced in the framework of the CABFIN Partnership on rural finance with FAO, GIZ, IFAD, UNCDF, WB/CGAP, WFP.
