Plenary 6 – Commercial rural and agribusiness finance: lessons from the field

In the Netherlands, more than a century ago, Rabobank was founded by poor farmers who didn’t have access to financial services. The memory of this is the reason why Rabobank today offers help and advice to countries where rural people still do not have access to financial services. In this presentation, the author goes on to outline the lessons that can be learned from European cooperative banking experience and how a sustainable bank with rural orientation can be established. He then looks at some of the options for financing agriculture and describes the nature of supply chain finance.
