Plenary 1 – Keynote address: Why Use Agriculture for Development?

Alain De Janvry is part of the core team preparing the World Bank’s World Development Report (WDR) 2008 entitled Agriculture for Development. He shared with the conference participants part of the overview section which examines the structural features that make agriculture unique and discusses whether it can become an engine of growth. The consensus is that agriculture has been underused for development and that significant improvements are possible to enable more rural households work their way out of poverty.
