Does access to finance lead to women’s political empowerment?
Despite the great strides being made globally towards gender equality, the full economic and political empowerment of women remains elusive. Men still outnumber women in decision-making roles and vastly outnumber women in legislatures around the world.
To address this problem, some believe that empowering women politically should start with providing women access to finance and eliminating the underlying economic barriers that keep women on the sidelines in the first place. Yet even as access to financial services has increased around the world, it has not yielded the transformative impact on women’s lives many hoped for. How can we disrupt this status quo?
Does providing women access to finance play an effective enough role in empowering women politically or is there another way forward? This session, moderated by Andrée Simon, will explore the rich and complicated relationship between women’s access to finance and the impact it has on women’s political empowerment.
